Ear Training Dictation Rhythm

There is a reason ear training and dictation are so important in the traditional conservatory program. For example, if people did not watch a lot of professional football, they wouldn’t be aware of the level at which pros are expected to play. And without the awareness they would not even have the motivation to try to play at an exciting, high level. Thus awareness is a key step in learning and in music this begins with training the ear.
Instead of yelling at students to play in tune, we find it is more effective to train their ears so that they slowly become aware of what is in tune, out of tune, what is a healthy tone etc.

As for dictation, this is what creates awareness in understanding how reading music works. By listening and writing down music by ear, it opens up the inner ear which is the guide of every musician and also enables the student to relate what he or she hears with what he or she hears. There is a reason ear training and dictation are so important in the traditional conservatory program. These classes may seem slow and unhelpful at first but there is a reason they are a staple in conservatories for centuries. By educating the ear, it opens up the possibility for faster and more solid improvement in learning an instrument while also enabling the students to become capable of enjoying music at a deeper and more satisfying level.
